Two screws hold the bottle cage with its almost one-kilogram load to the often wafer-thin aluminium or carbon frame tubes. It is not uncommon for the threaded insert in the tube to come loose or for a thread to break. You can read how to repair the threads here.

Level of difficulty: for professionals

ToolHexagon socket, ring spanner, riveting pliers, cordless screwdriver, angle drill if necessary, tap drill

Auxiliary materialsTwo-component adhesive (resin-hardener system), cutting oil, threaded rivet if necessary, bottle holder

TIPS

- Well-stocked specialist bike shops have special pliers for blind rivet nuts in their workshop tool stocks. Ask there before you buy nuts and bolts to make your own tools.

- The repair kit for fixing the bottle cage is available for 19.80 euros from Mießen Eisenwaren, Monschau, phone 02472/7532. If you don't have the confidence to do the repair yourself, here is a contact: Reset Racing, phone 0511/47320440, info@reset-racing.de

Problem 1: Thread intact, thread insert loose

Check that the thread is running and hold the blind rivet nut firmly with your fingers. If there is a gap between the rivet nut and the frame tube, mix two-component adhesive. Apply the adhesive as thoroughly as possible between the rivet nut and the tube.

Problem 2: Thread damaged

Damaged threads can be recut if necessary. Position the tap with cutting oil perpendicular to the pipe and in line with the blind rivet nut. Carefully recut the thread. If the thread is irreparably damaged or the rivet is loose, it must be replaced.
