After the Vuelta Feminina, Demi Vollering (SD Worx - Protime) has now also won the women's Tour of the Basque Country. The Dutchwoman secured her second overall victory after 20222 with a solo ride of around 30 kilometres. Vollering attacked at the start of the Mendizorrotz mountain on the 115-kilometre stage around San Sebastian. At this point, a leading group of more than ten riders, led by Blanka Vas (SD Worx - Protime) and Amanda Spratt (Lidl-Trek), was still at the front, having broken away after 40 kilometres on the Jaizkibel.
Juliette Labous (dsm-firmenich PostNL) went with Vollering, but was unable to keep up with the favourite's pace until the summit and then gathered a chasing group around her, which was around a minute behind the leader. Mischa Bredewold (SD Worx - Protime), who was still wearing the leader's jersey at this point, remained in the peloton, but caught up with the chasers in the final kilometres.
Vollering, on the other hand, could no longer be caught. She crossed the finish line in San Sebastian with a 44-second lead, before it was Thalita de Jong (Lotto Dstny Ladies) who won the sprint ahead of Bredewold. This means that SD Worx's record in the Basque Country remains unblemished - all nine stages in the history of the race have been won by riders from this team (Vollering, Bredewold, Marlen Reusser), as have all three overall victories.
The best German in the overall standings was Ricarda Bauernfeind (Canyon//SRAM) in 17th place, 1:07 minutes behind Vollering. Apart from first place, the tour remained a game of seconds despite various difficulties, which was ultimately decided by bonuses at intermediate sprints or at the finish.
