The defending champion did not start the 17th stage in Aracena after falling shortly before the finish the day before. This was announced by his team Jumbo-Visma. Roglic had been in second place in the overall standings and had made up more and more time on the Belgian leader Remco Evenepoel over the past few days.
Jumbo-Visma did not initially disclose the extent of the injuries. Roglic crossed the finish line on Tuesday with his right arm and leg covered in blood. The 32-year-old has won the Vuelta for the past three years and would have equalled record winner Roberto Heras with a fourth victory. Already at the Tour de France in July, Roglic had to retire a few days after a crash.
