Unfinished at the Tour de France, the measure of all things at the Vuelta - until Remco Evenepoel came along. The excellent climber and time trialist comes with the recommendation of winning the Giro. Possibly a handicap: a second boss in the team. Tour de France winner Vingegaard has announced that he also wants to take part in the Vuelta: "We're going into the race as the captains."

The newly crowned Tour de France winner moves out to add the Tour of Spain to his palmarès. Like Roglic, Vingegaard has hardly any weaknesses and a very strong team at his side. The only question mark: the form of the Dane. While Roglic won the Tour of Burgos with aplomb, Vingegaard has not contested a race since the Tour de France.

Vuelta balance sheet: Overall winner 2022

Alongside Roglic and Vingegaard, Evenepoel is the big favourite for the Tour of Spain. Last year's winner made a strong start to the season in the spring of 2023 with victories at the UAE Tour and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, but then had to abandon the Giro d'Italia while leading due to coronavirus. After the Tour de France, which he did not compete in, he returned to the racing circuit with - what else - victory at the Clasica San Sebastian; this was his third victory in this race since 2019. He also won the individual time trial title at the World Cycling Championships in Glasgow.

Vuelta balance sheet: Two starts, 11th place in 2020

The designated captain of the German World Tour team Bora-Hansgrohe has had a rather mixed season so far - which is also due to the fact that he was also taken out of the Giro d'Italia by the coronavirus after stage 10. If he is in top form, the tall climber will be well prepared for the extremely mountainous Vuelta. Second place behind Roglic in the Tour of Burgos shows that Vlasov is on the right track.

Vuelta a Espana 2023 - Favourites: Enric Mas

After the Tour de France came to an end for the experienced cyclist after the first stage following a crash and broken shoulder blade, Mas is now entering his home tour with renewed motivation, having already finished in second place three times.

Bold tip? Shortly before retiring from cycling, Thomas made people sit up and take notice with second place at the Giro d'Italia. A top result in Spain would round off the career of the tour rouleur (18 Grands Tours), who is a strong climber and solid time trialist.

Vuelta a Espana 2023 - Favourites: Juan Ayuso

At just 19 years of age, Juan Ayuso already stood on the podium of the Tour of Spain last year. In the absence of Tadej Pogacar, the youngster will share the captaincy of UAE Team Emirates with Joao Almeida.

Last year, Almeida led UAE Team Emirates together with Ayuso at the Vuelta a Espana. At times, the team's tactics seemed very confused - as was the case in many other races where the leader was not Tadej Pogacar. Almeida is a very good all-rounder who finished third in this year's Giro, his first Grand Tour podium.
