Old topic, new approach: the growing number of carbon wheels still requires the use of tubular tyres. The glued tyre is also still present in the professional peloton. TOUR has sounded out the market and clarified whether the tubular tyre still has a future. (TOUR 7/2004)

Clincher tyres have long since outstripped tubular tyres. Actually. No road bike manufacturer equips its models with tubular tyres as standard any more. Today, many professional cyclists also ride on clincher tyres, not only in training but also in races - world championships, classics and tours have long been won on clincher tyres. However, many of the best still swear by glued tyres. Why do they stick to this antiquated technology?

The most frequently cited argument is that glued tubular tyres are safer in the event of a puncture because they do not come off the rim immediately and allow the bike to retain a certain degree of manoeuvrability; an important aspect in the densely packed racing peloton and on fast descents. Apart from that, tubular tyres are said to be less sensitive to punctures, weigh less and roll better than clincher tyres.

Recently, a new argument has come to the aid of tubular tyres, with gentle coercion: the trend towards producing aerodynamically shaped competition wheels made of carbon makes tubular tyres almost indispensable.

SHORT & SHORT
Tubular tyres are now inferior to clincher tyres in almost all disciplines. If they weigh little and roll easily, cyclists usually pay for this with poor puncture protection and constant air loss - some tyres have to be inflated daily. Tubular tyres offer clear advantages in terms of puncture resistance, while complicated assembly and high prices are not selling points.
