Some teams are using special rain tyres for the Tour de France 2023. TOUR took a look at them.

The Intermarche-Circus Wanty, Bora-Hansgrohe and Soudal - Quick Step teams each have a team vehicle whose roof rack is only fitted with racing bikes with special rain tyres. In the case of the two Specialized teams, this can be recognised by the black flank and the word "WET".

It is a previously unknown model, which has the same tread pattern as the other tyres in the Turbo family. The additional grip is presumably due to a modified rubber compound. It is apparently not a tubeless tyre, but a clincher, which is used here with latex tubes.

Intermarche-Circus-Wanty has a similar strategy, with one vehicle fitted with Continental Grand Prix 5000 AS tyres. AS stands for "All Season", which also offers more grip in wet conditions and better puncture protection. The mechanics tried to cover up the reference to the special tyres with sharpie - but in some cases it didn't quite work.
