When triathlon pro Faris Al-Sultan starts his Ironman race, he tapes off the display of his power meter, which could tell him how hard he is pedalling, how fast his heart is beating and much more along the way. He does this so as not to be distracted during the race. He rides by feel, listens to his body. Just like the majority of professional cyclists.
Everyone should be able to ride by feel, not just the pros. After all, following only the speedometer and heart rate monitor can be counterproductive - if you haven't learnt to interpret your own body's signals correctly. The well-known example of "hunger pangs", which even experienced racing cyclists have suffered, shows that you first have to learn to feel your own body.
