Can women put up with more pain than men? This seems to be suggested by a Canadian study that focussed on the pain tolerance of both sexes. The test subjects were first exposed to heat stimuli and then had to complete strength exercises. While men reacted more sensitively every day, the female test subjects did not experience an increased level of pain during the exercise. The researchers believe the reason for this lies in the difference in pain memory: while men store the pain they experience, women forget the pain - and can therefore withstand greater exertion the following day. However, the study is not directly transferable to stress management in endurance sports.
