With cleverly designed ultra-light forks, brakes and cranks made of carbon, THM founder Thomas Mertin earned himself an excellent reputation in the global lightweight construction scene. In 2016, the man from Schleswig-Holstein sold his company to the component manufacturer 3T. Not to retire, however, but to be able to concentrate more on what he is most passionate about: The development of components. Mertin will be showing two examples of this at the joint stand of 3T and THM. Although the design of the new Fibula brake is reminiscent of the previous model, it has been completely redesigned. The brake is now also designed for wider rims up to 30 mm and tyres up to 28 mm wide. All small parts and even the spring are made of carbon fibre. The width between the pads can be adjusted without tools, making it much easier to switch between different wheels. According to Mertin, the leverage ratio of the brake should not change. The weight of the new Fibula is definitely impressive, the set weighs between 120 and 130 grams and is approved for a total weight (rider and wheel) of up to 110 kg. The manufacturing process is also new. The Fibula is no longer made from pre-impregnated carbon prepregs, but using the resin transfer moulding process. In this process, dry carbon fibres are inserted into the production mould and the resin is then injected. This process promises lower production costs for larger quantities. The weight of the new Tibia full carbon stem is also spectacular, weighing in at just 78 grams in 100 mm length. In 120 mm length, the Tibia weighs 85 grams. http://www.thm-carbones.de
