At 3,300 metres above the Sierra Nevada, the Veleta road leads to the highest point in Europe accessible by road bike.

The Sölden glacier road to Tiefenbachferner (2,829 m) leads to the highest point in the Alps that can be travelled by road bike. The Veleta road ends more than five hundred metres higher in the Sierra Nevada - making it the highest in Europe. However, if you want to reach the summit of Pico Veleta (3,394 m), you have to ride almost a hundred metres uphill on a dirt track and shoulder your bike over rocks for the last 20 metres. Between 1935 and 1989, the tarmac road ended right at the summit. But to protect nature, the authorities closed the road above the ski station to motorised traffic and tore away the surface below the summit.
