“Same Sun” recounts Wiebke’s cycle journey from Freiburg to the Cape of Good Hope – 20,150 kilometres, 22 countries, 430 days. The film is an honest exploration of the experience of being on the road, not merely a visual narrative: it depicts encounters, doubts and personal growth. What begins on 3 October 2023 in Freiburg with a fully loaded bicycle ends 430 days later at the Cape of Good Hope – and is later followed by another chapter: the cinema tour. The journey leaves not only Wiebke changed and longing for more, but also all the cinema-goers.
There was a special atmosphere in the air that evening in Westpark: just over 1,000 people were seated in the grounds as the screen came to life at sunset. First came the usual trailers, then a small prize draw – a copy of Wiebke’s book *Immer Richtung Süden* and a portion of popcorn changed hands – before the film captivated the audience for 82 minutes. Anyone who fancied it could grab a bite to eat beforehand at the Pinsa Hut or from the Vietnamese street food stall. All in all, it was a cosy setting for a travel documentary that’s in a league of its own.
Director Fabienne Engel was present for around 45 of the 430 days of the journey and has distilled an 82-minute film from 105 hours of raw footage, which portrays the journey in a profound, emotional and honest way. Incidentally, the film quietly dispels the notion that great adventures are a man’s domain.
The summer tour takes Wiebke across the entire DACH region, with screenings from Hamburg to Zurich and from Berlin to Innsbruck – and she will be there in person at every screening for a live Q&A afterwards. In some cinemas, the film is also showing as part of the regular programme without a Q&A.
For those who want to delve even deeper: Wiebke’s book *Immer Richtung Süden* tells many of the stories behind the journey that Wiebke didn’t share on Instagram – from having her bike stolen in the Sahara to the challenges of returning home.
All dates and tickets are available here. The book *Always South* is available from Delius Klasing Shop available.
