On the coastal road in the south-west of the island of Phuket, steep but mostly short stretches of 18 to 20 per cent alternate with gently curving serpentines that lead through rubber plantations and dense rainforest. The view sweeps over lush green Kasurin spruce trees to the shimmering turquoise Andaman Sea, in which countless offshore islands lie like giant, sluggish amphibians in the morning mist. The east of the Thai island is not as steep as the west coast of Phuket - where mangrove forests line the flat stretches of coastline. The topography in the interior of the island and on the mainland is also more moderate, undulating at best.
