Maremma is located in southern Tuscany in the Grosseto region. Its name is derived from the Spanish word "marisma", which means marshy coastal land - which is exactly what the Maremma was for a long time. The landscape is characterised by medieval town fortresses perched on hilltops, but also by geothermal energy plants. Power stations convert geothermal energy into electricity, and in some places there are warm rivers that are perfect for swimming. Our location Massa Marittima is 20 kilometres from the sea - where the hills of the Maremma rise up from the plain. It is a medieval village that, in typical Tuscan style, is situated on a hill. It is surrounded by a dense network of small country roads that lead to marvellous places such as Roccastrada or Civitella. One even leads as far as Volterra, one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany, 60 kilometres to the north.
In the Maremma, you will only find flat stretches right by the sea. The beautiful medieval towns are almost all located on hills - if you want to visit them, you need to work hard to gain metres in altitude. If you want to cover some distance and are not quite as fit, you need to choose your tours carefully in the hilly terrain. Our tours lead through the wide and open landscape typical of Tuscany, with gentle hills and sweeping views, but also through lots of woodland. There are often nice bars and good restaurants to the left and right of the road, but it can also happen that there are no refreshment stops along the route for 50 kilometres.
