Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, is just over half the size of Switzerland and is only 145 kilometres from the North African coast. Our tours are all located in the westernmost tip of the island. Western Sicily is predominantly unwooded, with huge areas used for grain and wine growing.
In contrast to the mountainous north and east, the area in the west is predominantly undulating to hilly. The highest altitude reached on our tours is 750 metres (the village of Erice), with gradients rarely reaching more than six to seven percent. The asphalt is often in need of repair, wide tyres do no harm. Road conditions and traffic density are difficult to judge from the map or road category. Some of the roads shown on the map only exist as dirt tracks, so it is better to orientate yourself by the many road signs. When planning the tour, we favoured routes with little traffic. In the sparsely populated interior of the island, this can sometimes lead to supply problems, but there are no problems stopping for refreshments on the coast.
