South-east of Tuscany, Umbria is a wild mix of forests, fields and olive groves. GPS data for four hilly tours can be found here, the full story in TOUR 11/2017

The region of Umbria is located in the centre of Italy, surrounded by Tuscany, Lazio and the Marche; its capital is Perugia. Umbria is characterised by extensive mountain ridges with pasture farming and arable farming. Our Tavernelle site, which belongs to the municipality of Panicale, is located in western Umbria, around 130 kilometres south-east of Florence and around 30 kilometres south-west of Perugia, in a hilly area between Lake Trasimeno, the fourth largest lake in Italy, and the Nestore, a tributary of the Tiber. The mostly wooded hills of the region reach heights of just over 800 metres, with Tavernelle lying at an altitude of around 240 metres.

Typical low mountain range: the hills are mostly uphill or downhill, long scooter routes are only found in the larger valleys or on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. However, the gradients are usually in the single digits, and there are seldom any steep ramps. Many of the climbs are between three and eight kilometres long, the longest on our tours even stretches 20 kilometres from Orvieto to Monte Peglia, but only covers an altitude difference of just under 700 metres. What also slows you down is the often rough tarmac. Some of the roads are also in a miserable state, especially near Lake Trasimeno, but also at altitude on Monte Peglia: torn-up tarmac and potholes require a great deal of concentration, especially on the descents. However, it is usually possible to take your own line, as most of the roads on our tours have very little traffic.
