From the small harbour of the fishing village of Marina di Camerota, the view extends far across the sea to the south; in the distance, the silhouettes of high mountains can be seen in the morning haze. Gerardo crouches at the helm of his fishing boat; the diesel engine chugs steadily over the waves, he looks on levelly, a filterless cigarette tucked into the corner of his mouth. The fisherman is silent for a long time. Then he nods his head into the distance, towards the south, and says: "Calabria." He says it as if he were talking about a foreign continent. And not about Cilento's neighbouring region to the south.
Gerardo's homeland, the Cilento, is a microcosm of unspoilt southern Italy. Along the hundred kilometres of coastline, long sandy beaches alternate with cliffs that rise steeply and abruptly out of the blue sea. Wolves and otters still live in the forests in the hilly, sometimes mountainous hinterland. The "successful balance" between man and nature was the reason why UNESCO declared the Cilento a World Heritage Site in 1997.
