When the rock towers of the Pala group rise higher and higher on the right from San Martino onwards, this is probably one of the most magnificent moments on a mountain pass in the Alps. The Cimon della Pala, over 3,000 metres high, juts into the sky like a steep tooth. Its pyramid is regarded by mountaineers as the Matterhorn of the Dolomites. Cyclists can enjoy this spectacle in a relatively relaxed manner, as the climb to the top of the pass is long but rarely steeper than six to seven per cent. The moderate gradient is proof that the route was created long before motorised traffic, when muleteers and horse-drawn carts crossed the pass.
