An ADAC video on the subject of compulsory lights for road bikes and MTBs in Italy is causing a stir online. The message of the video is misleading.

"Italy has tightened the Italian road traffic regulations and in some cases decided to ban cyclists," reads a ADAC video on YouTube. This statement caused great uncertainty among racing cyclists. The core message was adopted by numerous media (e.g. "Out for racing bikes on the road"). The ADAC referred to Article 68 of the Italian Highway Code. This stipulates that all bicycles must have lights and reflectors - including racing bikes and mountain bikes. What the video does not explain is that this lighting obligation has existed in Italy for years and is by no means new.

Only one detail was clarified in 2021: Cyclists must have a light on half an hour before and after sunset as well as in tunnels, in fog, snowfall, heavy rain and other poor visibility conditions. Of all things, this key message has been omitted in the German Translation of of the regulation by the authorities in South Tyrol is confusing, as "funzonianti" is translated as functioning. The ADAC therefore argues that in Italy you only have to have a functioning light on your bike - it does not have to be switched on.

However, this is a misinterpretation, explains the Mobility Administration Office of the Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol when asked by TOUR: "Lights and reflectors must always be present on the vehicle and the lighting equipment must be switched on at the specified times."

So don't let the headlines about the "end for racing cyclists" drive you crazy - Italy will remain a country of cycling. The experience of recent years shows that the strict obligation to use lights in Italy has not yet been penalised. Theoretically, the law even requires reflectors and a bell - here too, we know of no cases of checks or penalties. However, TOUR advises - as does the ADAC - to always ride with headlights in Italy and to switch them on when visibility is poor.
