With its elevated position, the southernmost mountain could also be described as Italy's Mont Ventoux: Like its French counterpart, several routes lead to its summit, the differences in altitude to be overcome are similarly impressive and the panorama is just as stunning. The history of Monte Grappa, however, is a worse one. When the front between Italy and Austria-Hungary ran along its ridge during the First World War, more than twenty thousand soldiers died up there.
