Piedmont in north-west Italy is no longer an insider tip among mountain bikers. On the border with France, a dense network of military trails covers the mountain ridges, such as the famous Assietta ridge road, which starts at the Colle delle Finestre (2,176 metres). Road cyclists can also experience a spectacular wartime route on the Finestre, which connects the Val di Susa with the Val Chisone, provided they are not put off by an eight-kilometre stretch of natural road.
The Colle delle Finestre became famous in 2005 when the Giro d'Italia discovered it as a dramatic backdrop. In 2018, the mountain was part of the challenging final week of the Giro for the fourth time. On the 19th stage Venaria Reale - Bardonecchia / Monte Jafferau the Colle delle Finestre was passed from Susa as the second of four mountains.
