Impressive passages on the Penserjoch
The classic route from the Brenner Pass to Bolzano follows the narrow Eisack Valley downhill, where the motorway, railway and settlements squeeze together. However, there is a more direct route over the Penserjoch (2,214 metres).

The Penserjoch is one of the highest passes in South Tyrol. Behind it lies a wonderfully long descent through the Sarntal valley, which stretches out before you as if forgotten by time. The north-facing ascent to the Joch starts right on the outskirts of Sterzing - where the Jaufenpass branches off in the direction of Meran. The first two kilometres are still gently uphill, after which the northern ramp up to the top of the pass offers no respite. With an average gradient of almost eight per cent, the road climbs towards the pass. Coming from the south, the pass presents a different face. The number of metres in altitude alone - 1,952! - is impressive. Nevertheless, this ascent is easier than the one from the north because the metres in altitude are spread over almost 50 kilometres.
