Five hairpin bends in tunnels: it took 7,000 workers almost three months to complete this section of the B au.
Just 706 metres above sea level is the Passo di San Boldo, which connects the Val Belluna to the south with the Po Valley.

It's tiny in the Alps, but the curious construction on its southern side makes the crossing an impressive experience. The reason for this is the First World War. At that time, in 1918, the Austro-Hungarian army had supply problems on the Piave front, which ran close by over Monte Grappa. Artillery, ammunition, troops and supplies had to be constantly transported there. And as the route around the mountain range meant a diversion of around 50 kilometres, it was decided to turn the old mule track over the San Boldo Pass into a military road.
