Bergamo Alps: lonely little roads with fantastic views - and sometimes poor surfaces.
Only those in the know are likely to recognise the crossing from Val Camonica (Lago d'Iseo) and Val Giudicarie (Lago d'Idro) as Passo Croce Domini. However, this is what the signs in the valley towns for the Goletto di Cadino (1938 metres) in the Bergamo Alps, which belong to Lombardy, say.

If you climb up from Val Camonica through the southernmost tip of the Parco regionale dell'Adamello, you first reach the Passo Croce Domini at an altitude of 1,892 metres, where there is an inn. However, the highest point of the crossing is one kilometre further east, mapped as Goletto di Cadino. Only an iron cross, reminiscent of a motorbike accident, marks the top of the pass in the Bergamo Alps, which are little developed for tourism - a paradise with beautiful passes in a lonely mountain world. But if you want to gain metres in altitude here, you shouldn't have an aversion to poor road surfaces. Although the road to the Goletto di Cadino is asphalted throughout, the road surface resembles a patchwork quilt in some places, especially on the eastern ramp.
