On long winter evenings, our Swiss author is drawn to the sea in his thoughts. That's when Dres Balmer has the best - and most unusual - ideas. This time: circumnavigating the Adriatic by bike.

The winter plans turned into a spring trip. Three weeks with the water on the left and the mountains on the right. From the start in Trieste, we travelled along the coast, later taking the Strada Romea and Via Adriatica south to Bari and the ferry to Igoumenitsa. Apart from the Parco Colle San Bartolo and the Gargano (up to 850 metres above sea level), the Italian coastal roads are flat, a third of which are busy.

On the entire eastern side of the Adriatic it is the other way round: flat sections are the exception, sharp climbs, countless crossings up to 1,000 metres above sea level and racy descents follow one another. From the Greek ferry harbour, the tour leads to the Albanian border, via Tirana on to Montenegro and Dubrovnik. We take several ferries through the Croatian islands before returning to the starting point in Trieste via Brestova in Istria. A total of 2,648 kilometres...
