The Galibier is a "Hors Catégorie" pass. A term that makes the professional cyclists at the Tour de France groan when it appears on the route map. There, the dreaded "HC" sits enthroned above the particularly jagged peaks in the elevation profile of a mountain stage - and denotes the highest of five difficulty levels in the classification of the climbs. Literally translated, "hors" means something like "outside". Perhaps beyond the normal? Or beyond good and evil? A pass is classed as "HC" if there are more than 1,500 metres in altitude to climb in one go, or 1,000 metres in altitude with a gradient of at least 6.5 percent. However, although the Galibier fulfils both attributes, it is not a mountain with murderous ramps. Rather a tough fellow. And above all a veteran of the Tour de France.
