The Col de la Madeleine is one of the classic passes of the Tour de France. The peloton has crossed it 25 times since 1969.

The pass connects the Maurienne region in the south with the Tarentaise region in the north, which is known for its mega ski resorts, above all the "Trois Valées" with the villages of Val Thorens, Méribel and Courchevel. While topographical maps show the pass at 1,993 metres above sea level, the brick sign at the pass crossing claims that you are 2,000 metres above sea level. Either way, the Madeleine is not one of the highest passes in the Alps. Nevertheless, from the starting points of Feissons-sur-Isère (427 m) in the north and La Chambre (465 m) in the south, both situated in deeply incised valleys, there are more than 1,500 metres of altitude to climb on both ramps.
