Carinthia, Austria's southernmost province, benefits from the mild climate on the sunny southern side of the main Alpine ridge and offers road cyclists a variety of tours over mountains and along lakes.

We had some expert help in our search for the most beautiful road bike routes in Carinthia. Three prominent athletes told us about their favourite racing bike routes in their home region: skiing legend Franz Klammer, who loves to get on his racing bike, Styrian professional cyclist Bernhard Eisel, who lives in Klagenfurt, and former professional cyclist Peter "Paco" Wrolich, who now works as cycling coordinator for the state of Carinthia.
The tours resulting from the collaboration lead to three regions: the area around Lake Millstatt, with tours into the Gailtal and Gurktal Alps and the Drau Valley. The Bad Kleinkirchheim region, with tours to the Nockberge mountains in the north and to Lake Ossiach in the south. And the area around Lake Klopeiner See, from where our tours lead to the foot of the Karawanken, through the Lavanttal and over the Saualpe. With three tours in each of the three regions, from moderate tours over gentle hills to challenging mountain passes, there is something for everyone. And perhaps you would like to compete with other amateur cyclists? Then you will also find information on worthwhile cycle marathons for each region.

The Carinthia Special is a supplement in the March issue of TOUR, which you can download from order conveniently online here can.
