The 34 kilometre Nockalm Road is a highlight for racing cyclists. (TOUR 10/2007)

The 34-kilometre Nockalm Road is a highlight for racing cyclists. First opened as a panoramic road in 1981, it connects the villages of Ebene Reichenau and Innerkrems and leads to two pass summits of roughly the same height: the Schiestlscharte (2,024 m) and the Eisentalhöhe (2,042 m). Those starting from the south, from Ebene Reichenau, have to climb 1,445 metres in altitude, from the north only 1,049. 52 hairpin bends wind their way through the Nockberge National Park, through the largest spruce, larch and stone pine forest in the Eastern Alps and over gentle, grassy mountains, the "Nockn", whose peaks reach up to 2,440 metres. The flower and herb meadows are particularly fascinating. As a reminder of the rich flora, each of the "Reidn", as a hairpin bend is called in Carinthian dialect, bears the name of a native plant, such as the "Grantn-Reidn", the cranberry hairpin bend.
