Today's winter sports resort of Kühtai at the top of the pass originated from an ancient cow pasture (Chutay), which was first mentioned in the land tax register of the Counts of Tyrol in 1280. Many participants of the Ötztaler, which has been leading from the west via Oetz to the Kühtaisattel for years, will have painful memories of its ramps. The many unrhythmic steep steps are particularly unpleasant. On the eastern ramp, which is up to 15 per cent steep, there are also agonisingly long straights; not a single hairpin bend adds variety to the climb. On the west side, you can at least enjoy beautiful views of the Ötztal valley for the first few kilometres.
