Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) has confirmed his status as one of the biggest up-and-coming talents of the season with another victory. At the Tour of Poland, which is part of the UCI World Tour, the 21-year-old Belgian secured the opening stage on a small mountain top finish. The son of multiple cross world champion Sven Nys was more lively than his rivals and thus gained three seconds on his closest rivals Wilco Kelderman (Visma | Lease a Bike) and Lukas Nerurkar (EF Education EasyPost).
Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Lease a Bike) finished in fourth place, six seconds behind. The Dane had tried to open up a gap around 600 metres before the finish, but was unable to break away. His attack was a reaction to the attack by Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates), who had tackled the last 2000 metres of the three three-kilometre long final climb together with Kelderman. Nys, on the other hand, held back for a long time and only went on the offensive in the last 300 metres. In the steepest section of the finale, with a gradient of up to nine per cent, he gained the decisive seconds.
A four-man breakaway group dominated the majority of the 156-kilometre opening stage of the Tour de Pologne from Wroclaw to Karpacz and thus into the Giant Mountains. The last remaining member of the quartet was caught near the ten-kilometre mark. Pepijn Reinderink (Soudal - Quick Step) then attempted a solo, which ended at the foot of the final climb.
With his ninth career victory, Nys has also taken over the overall classification, with breakaway rider Michal Paluta (Polish national team) in the mountain jersey. Stage 2 features a 15-kilometre mountain time trial.
