De Bondt did not play a role in the finale on the third day either. But the man from Alpecin-Deceuninck was, as on the first two stages, in the day's escape group and once again picked up bonus seconds at the intermediate sprints - enough to take Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious), who had ridden in red the day before but only finished tenth this time, out of the bunch. De Bondt now leads the Italian by two seconds and Kooij by eight.
Together with De Bondt, Julius Johansen (Intermarche-Circus-Wanty), Jens Reynders (Israel - PremierTech) and Frederik Wandahl (Bora-Hansgrohe), who had already acted as breakaway riders on the first two days, also took part. They were joined by Petr Kelemen (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Lukas Pöstlberger (Jayco - AlUla).
While De Bondt won the two intermediate sprints around Nanning, Wandahl took two of the three mountain classifications and, with the points, further points for his mountain jersey, which he has been wearing since the first day. Just before the third mountain classification of the day, 18 kilometres before the finish, the breakaway was caught.
It only became hectic again two kilometres before the finish. Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe), Ivo Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates) and Arnaud De Lie (Lotto Dstny) crashed, in the absolute final Milan was only able to avoid a crash with luck.
However, De Bondt will not have too much of the red jersey. Tomorrow, a mountain finish awaits the riders on the 4th stage of the WorldTour.
The women's Tour of Chongming Island (2nd WWT) came to an end with the 3rd stage. Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) was the fastest this time over another 112 completely flat kilometres near Shanghai. After 4th place at the start and 3rd place the following day, the Italian also won the tour with the most bonus seconds. Ahead of Daria Pikulik (Human Powered Health), who also finished second on the final stage, and Mylene de Zoete (Ceratizit - WNT), who had won the opening stage. Martina Fidanza (Ceratizit - WNT) came third on the day.
