In the big showdown between the two cycling stars Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step), the Italian Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) took victory in the first mountain finish of the 2023 Tour of the Catolonia.
The three-time stage winner of the Giro d'Italia won the second stage at an altitude of 2100 metres in Vallter after 165.4 kilometres by a wafer-thin margin ahead of the Slovenian overall winner Roglic and the Belgian road cycling world champion Evenepoel. The tour serves the top stars as a test of form for the Tour of Italy in May.
Roglic leads the overall standings, who had won the opening stagesix seconds ahead of Evenepoel and Ciccone. The Slovenian had only just completed the difficult stage race a week ago. Tirreno-Adriatico won.
There was another heavy crash on Tuesday. Frenchman Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo) apparently suffered a serious shoulder injury. The day before, his Italian Trek team-mate Dario Cataldo had also been hit, who had to be hospitalised with a fractured neck of femur, broken hip, broken collarbone, two broken vertebrae, several broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
