Showed strong form recently: Lennard Kämna at the Tour de Suisse, which he finished in sixth place
The Tour of Austria will take place from 9 to 13 July 2025 in the shadow of the Tour de France. A number of professional cyclists will be at the start in Steyr who, for various reasons, will not be taking part in the most important cycling race and will now be able to let off steam on the five stages on the way to the finish in Feldkirch/Vorarlberg. These include the German Tour stage winner Lennard Kämna, the Giro stage winner Georg Steinhauser and the runner-up of this year's Giro d'Italia, Isaac del Toro.

Lennard Kämna didn't sound deeply disappointed when he was asked whether he would be at the start of the Tour de France - where he celebrated a stage win and his international breakthrough in 2020. And said no. The 28-year-old from near Bremen is happy to be back at the forefront of cycling. At the DM a good week ago, he told the dpa that until two or three months ago it was not at all clear "whether I would be back at all". In short: he is happy that his comeback has already been successful - even without starting on the Tour this year. That was by no means certain after his serious training accident in Tenerife in April 2024. In the meantime, the then critically injured rider has made great progress on the road to regaining his former strength, most recently competing at the front of the Tour de Suisse and finishing sixth in the final classification.

His next race for his team Lidl - Trek will take place from 9 July in his adopted home of Austria: at the Tour of Austria, where the varied terrain and the sometimes high mountains should suit him. He will be accompanied by Austrian Patrick Konrad, who has also already celebrated a stage win in the Tour de France and is hoping for a top result in his home tour this year. Riding alongside them will be Spaniard Aleix Espargaro. The former Moto GP racer made headlines because he contested his first ever professional race on Austrian roads after switching to cycling.

Last year's winner missing from the Tour of Austria 2025

The Lidl Trek pros will be up against high-calibre opponents: the currently strongest racing team, UAE Team Emirates, is sending Isaac del Toro to the start, who, as a newcomer, only just missed out on overall victory at the Giro d'Italia in May - Only on the last mountain stage did the Briton Simon Yates get away from him in the battle for the pink jersey. Riding alongside the Mexican is Austrian Felix Großschartner, who will start the race with bib number 1. He inherits it from last year's winner Diego Ulissi, who won the overall classification in 2024 in the UAE jersey but will be missing this year after switching to XDS-Astana. His start was planned, but according to his sporting director Helmut Dollinger, he fell out of form after starting the Giro d'Italia and then winning the Giro dell'Appennino. A total of seven World Tour teams will be at the start. The German racing team Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe will be absent in Austria. Alongside Kämna, the German colours will be represented by Georg Steinhauser (EF Education), last year's stage winner at the Giro d'Italia, and Felix Engelhardt (Jayco AlUla), who recently narrowly missed out on the DM title.

There are also many smaller racing teams - including five from Austria and two from Germany, which are primarily dedicated to promoting talent. For example, the newly crowned German champion Georg Zimmermann and the German Tour hopeful Florian Lipowitz grew up with Team Tirol. The team's manager, Thomas Pupp, is also the director of the Tour of Austria, which was relaunched by the organisers of the Austrian Continental teams after a break during the pandemic years. The new Continental team RC Arbö Kärnten Sport Feld am See has signed Hermann Pernsteiner especially for the tour, which is the most important stage for Austrian cycling, and who is now mainly competing in mountain bike races again after his contract with Bahrain - Victorious expired. In Austria, they are hoping that a fellow countryman will triumph again after twelve years. The last time this happened was in 2013 with Riccardo Zoidl, who will be wearing the Hrinkow-Advarics team jersey this year.

In memory of André Drege, who died in an accident

The start number 171 is not on the start list. Last year, the number was worn by the Norwegian André Drege, who won the downhill from the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. was killed in a fall. His former team-mates from the Norwegian team Coop-Repsol are numbered 172 to 178. The Grossglockner is not part of this year's route.
