Demi Vollering's (SD Worx - Protime) dominance in tours continues. After recently winning the overall classifications of the Vuelta a Espana, the Tour of the Basque Country and the Vuelta a Burgos, she also made a big statement at the Tour de Suisse. She finished 22 seconds ahead of Gaia Realini (LLidl-Trek) and will once again ride in the yellow jersey on the upcoming 2nd stage.
Five kilometres before the finish, Demi Vollering broke away from the group of favourites with Gaia Realini (Lidl-Trek) on her wheel and set off to catch the seemingly uncatchable breakaway leader Elise Chabbey (Canyon//SRAM Racing). At this point, the Swiss rider had a lead of over a minute and a half over Vollering and co. However, the Dutchwoman increased the pace on the final climb to such an extent that Chabbey's lead dwindled more and more. One kilometre before the finish, Vollering and Realini overtook the Swiss rider. Shortly afterwards, Vollering also shook off the Italian and celebrated her day's victory unchallenged.
Elise Chabbey rode almost the entire 59 kilometres of the first stage of the Tour de Suisse Women as a soloist in the wind and put in a strong performance. Although she only managed third place in the opening stage of the tour, she won both mountain classifications and can wear the mountain jersey in the upcoming stage. The best German was her team-mate Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon//SRAM Racing) in eleventh place.
