With a strong individual time trial, Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) presented himself in good early form at the start of the Tirreno-Adriatico. After 11.5 kilometres in Lido di Camaiore, the 26-year-old, who wants to tackle the overall standings at this year's Giro d'Italia, was only 28 seconds behind the all-conquering two-time time trial world champion and world hour record holder Filippo Ganna (Ineos Grenadiers) from Italy.

Wearing the jersey of the German champion, Kämna, who had once won the junior world title, was even able to gain ground on the second part of the wet course. He also left his two team-mates Jai Hindley (Australia/+23 seconds), the reigning Giro champion, and Aleksandr Vlasov (Russia/+22) as well as three-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic (Slovenia/+21) well behind him.

Ganna pulverises Kämna's time

Only when Ganna pulverised the top time did the astonished Kämna have to leave the chair for the leader. The World Tour race in Italy continues this Tuesday with the second stage over 210 kilometres from Camaiore to Follonica. The overall winner will be decided on Sunday in San Benedetto del Tronto.
