Lennard Kämna has lost the lead in the Tirreno-Adriatico 2023 long-distance race. The 26-year-old rode to fifth place on the fifth stage, which was characterised by squalls, but lost the leader's blue jersey to the day's winner Primoz Roglic.

The Slovenian from Jumbo-Visma is first in the overall standings at Tirreno-Adriatico 2023 after his second success in a row, Bora-Hansgrohe professional Kämna is four seconds back in second place. "I'm a little disappointed that I lost the jersey," said Kämna. "It was still a good performance. The wind made the race tougher, but also more hectic and tactical, because you had to adapt to the wind. The last kilometre was really tough."

Stage 5 of Tirreno-Adriatico 2023 shortened

The stage had to be shortened by almost three kilometres, with wind speeds of 65 kilometres per hour at the finish in Fonte Lardina. As the wind mainly came from the front, the expected attacks on the final climb failed to materialise. Roglic only took the lead of a large group a few metres before the finish and had the strongest sprint. A top placing in the race between the seas, which ends on Sunday, is now within reach for the hard-fighting Kämna.

The sixth stage of the parallel Paris-Nice World Tour race had to be cancelled due to the storm. Previously, the section from Tourves to La Colle-sur-Loup had already been shortened to 80 kilometres.

However, trees had fallen on the route due to the squalls, which meant that the safety of the riders could no longer be guaranteed. The race continues on Saturday with the seventh stage from Nice to the Col de la Couillole.
