Tour 1 (83 kilometres, 1,960 metres in altitude, max. 16 % gradient)
Appenzell rollercoaster
Many small and one longer climb make this undulating ride a real challenge. The route winds its way through picture-book Switzerland, past alpine meadows and magnificent farmhouses, along quaint side roads. Between Eggersriet and Wienacht, you can enjoy marvellous views of Lake Constance at the northernmost point of the tour. After the rushing descent into the Rhine Valley, the Ruppen Pass leads back up into the Appenzellerland - a pleasant climb compared to the short and steep ramps that preceded it.
Tour 2 (122 kilometres, 2,680 metres in altitude, max. 13 % gradient)
Classic: Schwägalp
Schwägalp is the most popular excursion destination in Appenzellerland. On the old pass road, no wider than a mountain pasture track, you are accompanied only by the tinkling of cowbells. The old military road over Vorder Höhi is even more lonely. Rough concrete slabs make this ascent, which leads through Toggenburgerland in the canton of Sankt Gallen, even more difficult. On the south side, the view of Lake Walen makes up for the agony. Shortcut: If you want to avoid the second pass, you can turn right after the descent from Schwägalp in Neu St. Johann and cycle directly to Hemberg on cycle route 75. There you rejoin the original route (then around 67 kilometres and 1,300 metres in altitude).
