In the Middle Ages, the road linking the valley of the Vorderrhein with Ticino was even considered the most important north-south connection in Switzerland. Later, a railway line was even planned over the Passo del Lucomagno, as it is called in Italian, but this was never realised. This has allowed the valleys to retain a certain unspoilt character to this day. The section between Olivone in the south and the top of the pass is one of the most beautiful routes in Switzerland.
