Narrow, magnificent road: the path to Berghaus Männlichen, with the north face of the Eiger in the background
The north faces of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau are among the largest and most spectacular in the Alps. An insurmountable wall of rock and ice. At their feet runs a narrow road to the Berghaus Männlichen, which sits on a mountain ridge at an altitude of over 2,200 metres with a view of the Bernese giants.

The road is so narrow that no two cars can fit next to each other, even for bikes and cars it is narrow in some places. But just above the valley village of Grindelwald, it is closed to public traffic (follow the MTB sign there). Only mountain farmers with a special permit are allowed up to the alp and cattle. And racing cyclists. They should have a large sprocket fitted, because it gets steep, with hardly a section climbing at less than twelve per cent.
