RCS Sport, organiser of the Giro d'Italia and the major Italian races Milan-Sanremo, Tirreno-Adriatico and Strade-Bianche, has published the participating teams for its most important races of the first half of the season. It has now also been decided which teams will be allowed to start via wildcard.
Team Tudor Pro Cycling from Switzerland will be celebrating its premiere at the Giro. Only in its second season with a ProContinental licence, the team of former pro Fabian Cancellara has now been invited to its first Grand Tour. "The invitation is a great recognition of the work that the entire team has done since we entered the professional ranks last year. It may seem like a big step forward for our young team, but we believe it is a logical progression," said Raphael Meyer, CEO of the team, in a statement.
Wildcards go almost exclusively to Italy and Switzerland
The two other wildcards for the Giro go to the Italian teams Polti-Kometa and VF Group - Bardiani CSF - Faizane. While the latter is more or less a fixture at the Giro, the team of Ivan Basso and Alberto Contador is taking part for the fourth time in a row. Israel-Premier Tech also joins the ranks of the second-division riders, automatically qualifying as the second-best ProTeam in the 2023 UCI rankings. Lotto-Dstny could also have used this privilege, but voluntarily decided not to take part in the Tour of Italy.
As with the Giro, RCS Sport has primarily considered Italian and Swiss teams for its other races. One exception is Uno-X Mobility, the Norwegians have been invited to Tirreno-Adriatico. The team does not have to do without a Grand Tour either. A week ago, I received an invitation to the Tour de France. It remains to be seen who will be allowed to take part in the 2024 Vuelta.
