Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) expects attacks among the top favourites in the final week of the Giro d'Italia 2023. Due to the weather and some cancellations of important helpers, there was hardly any movement in the overall classification in the second week of the tour.
"I realise it looked a bit boring, but there will be some action," said Lennard Kämna on the second rest day. "I'm expecting a tough race, lots of tough mountains. I'll see how it goes. I've felt good on the longer climbs recently." Kämna will start the final stages, which begin on Tuesday with the mountain arrival on Monte Bondone, in seventh place overall.
If Kämna maintains his position in the overall standings of the 2023 Giro d'Italia, he would be satisfied in the end. "For me, it's the first Grand Tour that I'm riding for a classification," said the 26-year-old. He won't start "chasing dreams that I don't even have myself". The first two weeks were a waiting game, he said, and physically he felt good.
Leader Bruno Amirail (Groupama-FDJ), Lennard Kämna is currently 3:02 minutes behind. However, the Frenchman is not considered to be a climber and will probably lose his pink jersey on Tuesday. Kämna identified the three riders behind Amirail as favourites for the overall victory, the Brit Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) and the Portuguese Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates).
