The 17th stage of the Vuelta a Espana 2023 takes the riders from Ribadesella, which is located on the north coast of Spain, inland up the Altu de L'Angliru mountain. The mountain stage covers 124.4 kilometres and includes three categorised climbs and an intermediate sprint.
From the starting point of Ribadesella, the peloton is led uphill for 68 kilometres before the Alto de la Colladiella follows - a 1st category climb. Just 25 kilometres and an intermediate sprint later comes the Alto del Cordal, which is also classified as a 1st category climb. The ascent then takes place at over 1500 metres on the Altu de L'Angliru, which is even marked as an "Especial" category climb (category of honour).
After the riders have already tackled two 1st category climbs on the 17th stage, the final climb up the Altu de L'Angliru is even more difficult. It stretches over 12.4 kilometres and has an average gradient of 9.8 percent. The last 7 kilometres are particularly challenging, with an average gradient of 13.2 percent and ramps of 24 percent in places. Only enduring climbers can survive on this demanding mountain and compete for victory. You can also read more about the Angliru myth here.
The arrival on the Angliru is the second major highlight of the Vuelta a Espana 2023 alongside the 13th stage up the Col du Tourmalet. Victory on the 17th stage is extremely prestigious. The favourites for the overall victory will claim this day for themselves in order to bring about a preliminary decision in the battle for the red jersey here at the latest.
The peloton will set off at 13:40, with the sharp start at around 13:57. The calculated finish on the Altu de L'Angliru, which is the finish of a Vuelta stage for the 9th time, should be between 17:18 and 17:45 at an average speed of around 35 kilometres per hour.
Eurosport will broadcast all stages of the Vuelta a Espana 2023. The 17th stage will be shown free-to-air on Eurosport 1 from 14:30. Including post-stage coverage, the broadcast will run until 18:00. The paid providers GCN+ and Discovery+ will also be showing a live stream on the internet.
