After two extremely demanding days, the 15th stage features another hilly stage before a rest day. The start is in Pamplona, which is the start of a Vuelta stage for the 25th time, and the finish line is in Lekunberri. The municipality was already the finish line of the Vuelta in 2020. In addition to an intermediate sprint, the stage includes three categorised climbs.
The race starts in Pamplona, a city of over 200,000 inhabitants. From there, the peloton first rides over 50 kilometres on slightly hilly terrain before reaching the summit of the Puerto de Lizarraga after almost 80 kilometres - a 3rd category climb. The last 45 kilometres will be even more challenging for the riders: in addition to the intermediate sprint, two category 2 climbs await.
After the last mountain classification, which is 8.5 kilometres before the finish, the riders first have to descend steeply before reaching the finish in Lekunberri on flat terrain. The descent after the last mountain classification could be tricky for the riders. Full concentration is required here.
The hilly stage is tailored to the classics riders, who are likely to decide the stage among themselves in a breakaway group. At the same time, the peloton will be tired from the exhausting previous days and longing for the next rest day. A good classics rider is local hero Ivan Garcia Cortina from the Movistar Teamwho could possibly attempt a breakaway on stage 15. Nico Denz from Bora-Hansgrohewho emerged from breakaway groups at the beginning of the year at the Giro d'Italia could be aiming for victory on this day.
The field of riders will set off at 13:20, the sharp start will then take place at 13:33. The calculated finish at Lekunberri should be between 17:19 and 17:42 at an average speed of around 40 kilometres per hour.
Eurosport will broadcast all stages of the Vuelta a Espana 2023. The 15th stage will be shown free-to-air on Eurosport 1 from 14:30. Including post-stage coverage, the broadcast will run until 18:00. The paid providers GCN+ and Discovery+ will also be showing a live stream on the internet.
