Test: Lightweight saddlesPhoto: Daniel Simon
Lightweight saddles are reduced to the bare essentials. Can you really ride on such minimalists? We took a closer look at ten models weighing between 50 and 150 grams. (TOUR 3/2006)

If you want to reduce the weight of your road bike, at some point it's the saddle's turn. However, a lightweight saddle, carelessly bolted to the bike, can have serious consequences, as it is one of the trickiest places to save a few grams. A saddle weighs between 60 and 70 per cent of your body weight on the surface of a beer mat; and whether a 100-kilo man on an 80-gram saddle has an advantage over a 70-kilo rider on a 200-gram saddle remains to be seen. However, it doesn't look very elegant if the light saddle rider - regardless of weight - is mostly travelling in the saddle because his backside hurts.

You will find the following models in the free PDF download:

AX-Lightness Endurance and Phoenix, Bontrager Race XXX Lite, Roseversand WCR Fullcarbon CR-1, Selle Italia C64 Carbon and SLR TT, Selle San Marco Aspide Composite, Steinbach Carbon 3-Point, Tune Concorde and Speedneedle
