Selle Italia presents the fourth generation of the SLR saddle. The new SLR 2025 is available in five versions, from the 450 euro SLR 3D Carbon to the SLR Advan for just 150 euros.
The first SLR generation revolutionised the saddle market in 1999 with a weight of just 135 grams. Back then Competitor products weighed between 180 and 190 grams, giving the SLR a significant weight advantage. The minimalist design with a narrower profile and reduced padding became the hallmark of the entire product line. Professional racers quickly recognised the potential and chose the SLR for prestigious races.
The second generation followed in 2010 with the characteristic Superflow cut-out, which reduces pressure on the perineal area. Selle Italia introduced two widths for the first time: 130 mm and 145 mm for different anatomies. Lateral wings provided more stability and gave the saddle its unmistakable look. These design elements characterised all subsequent SLR versions and established the Superflow cut-out as the industry standard.
In 2018, Selle Italia responded to the trend towards short Saddles and launched the SLR Boost with a length of 248 mm. The 27 mm reduction compared to the original allowed for more aggressive riding positions and better freedom of movement. Longer rails compensated for the reduced saddle length and allowed precise position adjustments. This third generation retained the tried-and-tested Superflow cut-out and the two width variants.
A milestone followed in 2022 with the introduction of 3D printing technology for the SLR Boost 3D. This manufacturing method enabled complex surface structures that could not be realised using conventional methods. The 3D-printed cover offers variable stiffness zones and optimised pressure distribution. The technology formed the basis for the current fourth generation and its extended functionality.
The new SLR family is divided into five models with different equipment features. The SLR 3D Carbon uses 3D printing technology for the cover and carbon rails to minimise weight, but is also said to cost just under 450 euros.
The sister model SLR 3D Elite uses the same 3D surface but lightweight steel rails for better cost efficiency. It costs 90 euros less out of the box. Both variants offer the latest surface technology with optimised pressure distribution.
The SLR Carbon (RRP 320 euros) relies on handmade padding and carbon rails for a traditional feel with modern lightweight construction. The SLR Elite model for 230 euros combines lightweight steel rails with Shock Absorber technology and a perforated polyurethane cover.
The entry-level SLR Advan with steel rails and proven construction is competitively priced from €150. All models utilise the characteristic Superflow cut-out and the 242 mm length.
The 3D cover of the top model generates controlled grip without excessive adhesion. Riders remain in a stable position during starts and technical passages, while micro-shifts and friction are minimised. The surface structure prevents slippage during sweat formation and ensures constant power transmission. At the same time, the texture enables controlled position changes without disruptive grip.
The carbon structure offers high torsional stiffness for direct power transmission without energy loss. Every watt reaches the pedals, while the construction simultaneously filters out vibrations from uneven surfaces. The central Superflow cut-out distributes pressure evenly and relieves pressure on the perineal area, even on long rides. The improved ventilation reduces heat and moisture build-up on warm days.
Selle Italia can look back on 128 years of experience in saddle development and produces one million saddles every year. The company headquarters in Asolo in Veneto combines Italian craftsmanship with modern manufacturing technology. The combination of scientific data and practical experience characterises product development. The company is recognised as a technology leader and sets industry standards.
The idmatch fitting database with over 100,000 measurements forms the basis for anatomically optimised saddles. This data flows directly into product development and enables evidence-based design decisions. The combination of tradition and innovation makes Selle Italia one of the world's leading saddle manufacturers. The new SLR 2025 represents the current pinnacle of this development.
