Professional cyclist Magnus Sheffield, who crashed heavily at the Tour de Suisse, has been discharged from hospital.
This was announced by his British team Ineos Grenadiers. "He will now return home for a period of rest and recovery under the supervision of our medical team," it said in a message on Twitter. The 21-year-old American was therefore able to leave the clinic on Saturday.
Sheffield had suffered a concussion and minor bruising on the fifth stage of the tour. He had crashed in a similar place to Swiss rider Gino Mäder. The 26-year-old fell into a ravine at high speed on the descent from the Albula Pass to the finish in La Punt in the final kilometres of the fifth stage on Thursday and had to be resuscitated. He died a day later in hospital.
The exact circumstances of the accident are still unclear. The authorities are investigating and have also launched an appeal for witnesses. Sheffield may be able to help clarify the circumstances of the accident.
