Rechargeable mini pumps are taking jersey and saddle bags by storm - they promise effortless inflation and precise pressure control on the go. In our test of seven devices between 60 and 180 euros, the Silca Elettrico Ultimate came out on top and was the clear test winner. We present the other devices in random order.

Technology in mini format

The selection of mini compressors is growing rapidly: seven models from Cycplus, Dynamic, Muc-Off, NG Sports, Silca, Topeak and Trek are being tested. At between 60 and 180 euros, they are clearly more expensive than mini pumps or CO₂ cartridges, but offer fast, convenient pressurisation. There are limits to the tubeless setup. Tiny piston compressors work inside, driven by high-speed motors that make an audible noise and generate a lot of heat. Some devices get so hot that they can only be touched with a protective cover.

Performance and practice

All pumps can be operated in a similar way: Display, target value presetting, auto-stop, bar/PSI switchover and usually a short hose with heat protection are standard. In the practical test, all of them had to bring a 30 mm tyre up to four bar - with clear differences: Silca managed it in 30 seconds, Trek needed 73. The maximum pressure test up to seven bar revealed thermal reserves and weaknesses, such as very hot housings. Handling and features were also included in the assessment. The test winner was the Silca pump, which works well but is large and heavy.

The data and individual grades at a glance

  • Price / country of production: 179 Euro / China
  • Equipment / extras: Standard adapter, hose
  • Dimensions / weight: 33 × 60 × 103 mm / 242 grammes
  • tyres per battery charge (700 × 30): 8,5
  • Pumping time in seconds (4.0 / 7.0 bar): 32 / 80

Valuation

  • pumping capacity (35 %): 1,0
  • Battery performance (35 %): 1,0
  • Handling / Display (20 %): 2,0
  • Equipment (10 %): 3,5
  • TOUR grade (100 %): 1,5

This is our verdict on the test winner

The Silca compressor is the largest and heaviest pump in the test, but thanks to its anodised aluminium housing it makes by far the highest quality impression. Its size pays off in terms of performance: No other model pumps faster or for longer. It can inflate a tyre to four bar in just 30 seconds, and it can inflate more than eight tyres on one battery charge. Despite this power, it remains thermally uncritical - at a maximum of 38 degrees, it only gets warm to the touch. The only real disadvantage is its size: its weight and pack size are well above average and make it difficult to take with you on everyday trips.
