It came as a surprise: Maximilian Dörnbach won silver at the World Championships in Shanghai. There was just one top star he couldn’t get past.

German sprinter Maximilian Dörnbach has pulled off a surprise victory to win the silver medal in the keirin at the Track Cycling World Championships in Shanghai. The 30-year-old was beaten only by Dutch star Harrie Lavreysen and celebrated the greatest success of his career. Third place went to the Japanese rider Shinji Nakano.

For the German team, it was their second medal at the championships in China, following the women’s team sprint side’s third-place finish the previous day. For Dörnbach, who had already won two European Championship silver medals in the keirin, it was the first World Championship medal of his career.

Lavreysen, meanwhile, added to his outstanding record by claiming his 22nd World Championship title. The Dutch powerhouse also has five Olympic gold medals and 14 European Championship titles to his name.
