"Reactivity, agility, the bike responds perfectly to demanding terrain. The weight has been noticeably further optimised," says French FDJ pro David Gaudu about his new work tool - addressing one of the most striking further developments of the Xelius SL3. Thanks to a special carbon manufacturing process, Lapierre has succeeded in reducing the frame of its lightweight model by up to 230 grams.
The so-called Light version (sizes XS, S, M) weighs 725 grams, the Stiff version (sizes L and XL) 745 grams. However, only customers who choose the relatively expensive frameset will benefit from the weight saving. The frame weight for complete bikes should be around 845 grams. Lapierre did not provide any information on the complete bike weights.
The French have also tweaked the aerodynamics. Thanks to the new frame design - especially on the fork and head tube - and the integrated cables, the Xelius SL3 is 8.5 per cent faster than its predecessor (Xelius SL2 Team), according to the company. At 40 km/h, this should save 7 watts. The competition racer utilises its full aero potential in the high speed range; at 60 km/h, the advantage is said to be 22 watts.
The geometry is extremely sporty. The compact frame with a low centre of gravity is designed to make the Xelius SL3 more agile and responsive. According to Lapierre, vibrations are minimised by mounting the seat stays on the top tube and the conventional seat post. The maximum tyre clearance is 32 millimetres.
The new French road bike is now available in five equipment variants. The entry-level version with Shimano 105 starts at 2,799 euros, while the top model with the new Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 is priced at 7,399 euros. Lapierre also offers two framesets - including one in the FDJ team livery - for €3,299 each.
