The new model from the traditional Italian manufacturer is visually similar to the high-end V3Rs racer on which the Slovenian cycling star Tadej Pogačar won the Tour de France twice in a row. A closer look reveals that the Prototipo's head tube, seat tube, seat stays and down tube could be a little more aerodynamic.
In addition, the bottom bracket area of the Colnago Prototipo is said to have become stiffer. However, the Italian bike manufacturer did not provide any precise details. Only this much can be heard: "It was our goal to combine the technical results with the aesthetic results."
The Italians drew on the expertise of Norwegian designer Torgny Fjeldskaar (formerly BMC and Cannondale) and a "completely new construction method". According to this method, the individual carbon components of the monocoque frame were developed and tested individually. The result is five prototypes, each with carbon laminations of different thicknesses, which will now be put through their paces in races by the UAE Emirates team led by Tour winner Tadej Pogacar. Only then will the final version go into series production.
"Our aim was to combine the technical results with the aesthetic results."
"The ultimate goal is to achieve the best mix for a frame that must be as versatile as possible to meet the needs of sprinters, rouleurs and climbers alike," says Colnago engineer Davide Fumagalli, "and to be at the top in the different phases of a race."
It is not yet known when the new model will be available and, above all, at what price. For comparison: The V3Rs (TOUR 3/2022) is priced at around 14,000 euros. The recently launched C68 (TOUR 6/2022) starts at around 13,000 euros.
